Level 0 to Level 5 Drywall Finishes Explained
Understanding the Difference Between Standard Drywall Work and Premium Level 4–5 Finishing
When it comes to drywall installation, how the surface is finished makes a huge difference in the final look and feel of your home. It’s not just about hanging drywall sheets—it’s the drywall finishing process that really sets things apart. A proper finish can make your walls and ceilings look seamless and clean, while a poor one? Well, it can draw attention to every imperfection.
Whether you're planning to DIY or you're hiring a local drywall contractor in King or Snohomish County, it's helpful to understand the five recognized levels of drywall finishing—ranging from a bare install (Level 0) to a perfectly smooth surface ready for high-end paint (Level 5).
What Are Drywall Finish Levels?
Drywall professionals follow industry standards established by the Gypsum Association to define the different stages of drywall finishing. Each level reflects how much joint compound ("mud") and sanding has been applied, and what kind of result it’s designed for.
Most homeowners don’t walk around asking for a “Level 4 finish”—and that’s okay. The key is knowing the look you want. If you describe that to your drywall contractor, they’ll match it with the right finish level.
Why Higher-End Homes Require Better Drywall Finishing
In many remodels and custom homes, standard drywall finishing simply isn’t enough to achieve the clean, smooth appearance homeowners expect — especially under natural light, large windows, LED lighting, or higher sheen paints.
At L.A. Drywall Inc., we specialize in Level 4 and Level 5 drywall systems designed to minimize visible joints, reduce surface inconsistencies, and create a smoother final appearance throughout the space.
The final result depends on the entire system — from framing corrections and drywall installation to finishing, primer, and paint application.
Level 0 – Just Hung
At this stage, drywall sheets are installed but not finished. No taping, mudding, or sanding has been done. This is common in early construction or areas that haven’t reached finishing yet.
Level 1 – Basic Taped
The drywall joints are taped and that’s about all. You’ll still see seams, screws, and tool marks. Level 1 drywall finish is typical for unfinished spaces like attics, garages, or utility rooms.
Level 2 – Basic Coverage
Now we’ve taped the seams and applied a thin coat of mud. Screw holes are covered, but the surface still shows tool marks. This level is suitable if you plan to install tile, wall panels, or for drywall in storage areas and workshops.
Level 3 – Prepped for Texture
A thicker layer of joint compound is applied and smoothed out. This level is ideal for textured wall finishes like knockdown, medium to large orange peel, or spray textures. No need to go further if you’re covering the surface with a heavy texture.
Level 4 – Smooth or Light (fine) Texture Finish
This is the most common drywall finish level for residential interiors. At this stage, we apply multiple coats of joint compound over the taped seams and fastener heads, followed by a thorough sanding for a uniform surface.
Level 4 drywall finish is ideal if you're planning to:
Paint with flat or matte paint
Apply wallpaper
Use light textures like fine or small orange peel
It provides a smooth and clean surface but isn't quite refined for harsh lighting conditions—those situations call for Level 5.
This level is often used in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and areas with standard lighting.
Level 5 – Premium Finish
Level 5 drywall finish adds a final skim coat over the entire surface, eliminating all texture, flashing, and shadowing. The result? A flawless surface ready for glossy paint, high-end finishes, or rooms with dramatic natural light.
This level is perfect for:
Smooth ceilings with natural light
Showcase walls
Modern, minimalist interiors.

Common Ways to Apply a Skim Coat:
Roller: Thinned mud is rolled on and smoothed out
Taping Knife: Applied in sections and smoothed with a wide blade
Sprayer: Used by professional drywall contractors for even application
Level 5 requires more labor and skill and is usually an upgrade—so be sure to discuss it with your drywall professional.
Why Some Level 5 Finishes Still Look Bad
Not all Level 5 drywall finishes are equal.
Many contractors advertise “Level 5” while skipping critical preparation steps such as framing correction, proper lighting evaluation, skim consistency, dust control, primer touch-ups, and finish paint integration.
The final appearance of a wall is influenced by the entire process — not just the final skim coat.
Common Problems With Lower-Quality Drywall Finishing
Visible joints under lighting
Wavy wall surfaces
Flashing and uneven sheen
Poor inside corner alignment
Uneven texture transitions
Sanding scratches visible after paint
Fast production-focused finishing
Inconsistent skim coating
